Jeannie and Jim Morrison, of Ballydugan Cottages, are no
strangers to making changes for the benefit of their business. After inheriting
a row of derelict properties near Down Patrick, Northern Ireland, Jeannie
lovingly restored and adapted each one, transforming them into the holiday
cottages they are today. “Rather than demolishing the cottages, I wanted to
preserve what was good about them,” explained Jeannie.

The couple were recently inspired to become involved with
GTNI and Jeannie said this has already been a valuable learning experience. “I was
really surprised to learn that the lighting I’ve been using is inefficient,”
she said. “Gill advised us to look into LED lighting, which I hadn’t considered
before and which I’m looking forward to learning more about.”
Jeannie believes the support and information that GTNI can
offer is vital for businesses wanting to commit to green tourism, as “the
products available locally are very limited”. She said, “We already have a
biomass heating system, and customers are always pleasantly surprised to discover
we’re going the extra mile to ‘be green’. The GTNI audit has given me the
chance to learn more and I think our visitors will appreciate this.”
